Johnny Paul Dates Sr.

July 4, 1946- April 26, 2021

A Son, Brother, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, Friend, and pillar in his community has elevated from labor to reward. On Monday, April 26, 2021 the Lord spoke “Well done my good and faithful servant” and Johnny answered the call.

Johnny was born July 4, 1946 to the late Mary L. Jackson Embry. Johnny was adopted, loved, and cherished by the late Cleveland Dates and Minnie Bell Dates.

Johnny was publicly educated through the Childersburg Alabama School system.  Where he graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School the home of the Panthers. Johnny was known as Big Dates; he carried that name very well.

Johnny showed his love for Christ by accepting him into his heart at an early age. Where he attended Tallassahatchie Missionary Baptist Church, Childersburg AL.  He remained a member for many years before being drafted in the army. 

He met Gudrun Paul in 1983 the love of his life and they joined in matrimony in 1985, Johnny enjoyed spoiling his wife and family.

Johnny was drafted in the United States Army in 1966 were served his country for 20 years as a soldier retiring as a Staff Sergeant with an Honorable discharge. While serving he received numerous awards and medals to include the National Defense Serve Medal. Johnny was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 3892 Harker Heights, Texas.

After retiring from the Army Johnny worked for Defense Finance Accounting Serves (DFAS) for twenty-Five years where he received many awards.

Johnny was a proud member of the Masonic Organizations.  He was a Past Master of Nero Prince Military Lodge # 47, Honorary Past Potentate of Faisal Temple # 191 and a Grand Inspector General (33rd Degree Mason) of Donald H. Coleman Consistory # 329.

After a blessed life of 74 years, Johnny answered his master’s call, and accepted his heavenly wings to join his birth mother, adopted parents, and brothers Robert L. Dates and James E. Patterson, Sister-in-law Kerstin Paul.

Johnny’s love and fun memories will always be cherished by his loving and devoted wife Gudrun Dates of Harker Heights, TX; Son Johnny P “John John” (Elizabeth) Dates, Daughter, Dr. Letreise Winkfield, Four grandchildren, Laisha Nicole, Isaac Paul, Isaiah John and Domani Dushaun all of Texas. Mother-in-Law, Brunhilde Paul of Germany, Brother-in-Law, Roland (Martina) Paul of Germany., Two Sister-in-Law, Peggy Patterson of Sylacauga, AL, and Carmen Allen of Killeen, TX.  Eight nieces Sandra (Michael) Jemison, Kiyunda Dates of Childersburg AL, Patrece (Anthony) Tillis, Rolanda (Lamar) Smith of Los Angeles CA, April (Derrick) Pointer of Talladega AL, Japonica Patterson of Sylacauga AL, Shatora Watson of Ft. Deposit AL and Raphaela Paul of Germany. Three nephews Chris (Latasha) Patterson of Sylacauga AL, Robandelous M. (Stacey) Dates of Victorville CA and Mario Paul of Germany. One aunt, Dora Lee Pilate of Sylacauga Al.
