John “JT” Truett Ervin, age 91, passed away October 13, 2020. JT was born in Odessa, TX, February 20,1929. He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1947 and then enlisted in the Army to begin a lifetime of service to his country. He proudly served in the 82nd Airborne, 11th Airborne, 101st Airborne, 198th Field Artillery, and the 1st Cavalry. He served in Korea and Vietnam and was awarded a Silver Star and 2 Bronze medals for that service. He earned his Glider Badge and his Master “jump wings” which he always proudly wore on his hat, which was rarely not on his head. He loved his country as much as he loved God and his family.
JT was a quiet man with a huge sense of humor. He loved making others smile-either with a gift or some of his silly humor. He loved giving to others. If you came to visit he would always try to give you something. He was a man of sacrifice always putting others first. This is how he taught his family to live - to leave the world a little kinder than you found it. He loved life...fishing, soccer, motorcycles, reading, westerns, bowling, and Southern Gospel music!
JT loved God, his wife, and his family deeply. He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (Petty) Ervin, and is survived by 4 children and their spouses, son, John R Ervin of Sonoma, CA, son James C Ervin and Elaine of Pottsboro, TX, daughter Deborah J Rodriguez and Dan of Warrensburg, MO, and son Delbert W Ervin and Peggy of Joshua, TX. 18 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. Even with this large family “granddad” had found a way to leave each of us with our own special memory with him. He will be as deeply missed as he was loved. He was a Christian man and is now in heaven with Barbara and we look forward to our reunion there.
Come celebrate his life with his family - a memorial service for John will be at Heritage Funeral Home in Harker Heights, TX on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at 11am with military honors to follow at Killeen Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers a gift to the mission fund at Bethel Baptist Church, 416 NW Hwy13, Warrensburg, MO 64093
