George H. Winkel, age 71 of Killeen TX, passed away on Friday June 5, 2020, at the Killeen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Killeen TX. He was born March 10, 1949 in Portland OR. He was the second son of the late Matthew and Claudia Winkel. He graduated from the Portland Community College with a degree in Automotive Technology.
George proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVAN65). He spent 15 years employed at Apple Computer, as a component testing and special research and development project team member in California, Colorado, and Texas. He also worked for Dell Computer in Texas and for Vectrus Systems Corporation in Afghanistan. He was active in his community churches throughout his life and was an avid gardener.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
George is survived by his wife of 26 years Chin P Winkel, stepdaughter Susie Porter, oldest brother Matthew Winkel, younger sister Gabrielle Hatami, nephews Bijan Hatami and Bryan Hatami, and grandnephew Casey Hatami.
The family will greet visitors on Sunday June 14, 2020 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Heritage Funeral Home 425 E. Central Texas Expressway Harker Heights.
